Nana: A Personal Reflection
Nana’s Wish was established by my brother Sean and me to honor our Nana (grandmother), Rosa B. Sablan for her love and devotion for children and families. Nana passed away on August 8, 2011. Nana was not just our grandmother, she was Nana, grandma and Auntie Chai to everyone who met her. When people were in trouble, Nana would open her home and wallet to help them out. If someone wanted to borrow money, like $20, she would give them $40. Nana gave from her heart and never expected anything back. She taught all of us the importance of sharing and caring for one another. One time Nana became friends with a homeless woman. It was during winter and every day, Nana would bring the woman food to eat and spent time talking to her, about her life and situation. On Christmas, Nana bought the woman a heavy coat and thanked her for being her friend. Our Nana was truly a very special person and were all blessed to have had her in our lives.
Last week our "A Bike From Austin" program raised the funds needed to purchase a Buddy Bike for a young boy named Cory who has Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. To date, every family who contacted us for a Buddy Bike, we've been able to assist. Its a great feeling.
Now it's Nana's Wish to support a tobacco research project that is focused on Pacific Islander young adults (age 19 to 29). We want to help with the recruitment of Pacific Islander young adults for the project who are current cigarette smokers and also former smokers and who also live in Southern California. Please help us. Email us at info@nanaswish.org if you are a Pacific Islander young adult who smokes or who is a former smoker or know of anyone.
